The Sage of the Six Paths would probably kick anyone's ass that he came in contact with. Why would he have to belittle himself by pretending to be someone lowly such as Madara Uchiha? I'm pretty sure that if he announced himself as the Sage of the Six Paths then no one would want to fuck with him.

Maybe Madara is Madara, and his mangekyou sharingan allowed him to live for so long. Maybe after he was defeated by the first he transported himself into that other dimension and just stayed there for a while. :p
