Well he WAS stranded on a rock with a pirate he hated and was starving and all he knew was that the pirate had a big sack of "food" while he only had a small bundle of bread and other shit that was rotting/expired

Hated by the world for having a disease that wasn't actually contagious.
Only got out by hiding in the dead bodies being carried away.
Got the shit kicked out of him regularly by the pirate crew he joined.

Ace's life wasn't that bad. He never knew his father or mother, but at least he didn't have to watch everybody he ever knew get mowed down, and he still had Luffy.
