the only thing that confused me was the ending

i understand that the girl turned out to be his doughtier and the robot turned out to be her father

but was that other world other dimension that earlyer in the first series the scientist where talking about

and some how through time and space in another dimension they all ended up together and no one died?

and if thats true did him and his doughtier die in the snowy street

I wrote an explanation about this around 2 years ago:

(contains spoilers)

Well, Clannad/Clannad AS were based on the visual novel "Clannad", a videogame where you can take diferent paths to fish the story (but you must take all the possible paths, through different files, to fully complete it). It's about Tomoya helping out his friends and family to help himself understand the meaning of friendship and family (in fact "clannad" means family in irish, welsh or some language from around there). Every time he helps someone, he collects an orb (notice in the anime those bubbly things at the end of a story arch?, well that represents the orbs, although for some reason in the anime they only appear sometimes, while in the visual novel they always appear), and he must collect the orbs from all the characters to complete the game. If you don't get all the orbs you get the bad ending (the one with the deaths), but once you collect all the orbs you get the "happily ever after" ending.

That's why the story is divided into archs centered around a specific person, you have to collect the orbs of Fuuko, Kotomi, etc. In the visual novel the orbs for Tomoyo and the Fujibayashi twins you can only get by not going for the Nagisa orb, so when when they adapted those archs to the anime they had to make a parallel universe, and they made it into a special episode for each orb instead of giving them a whole arch.

while this is true, if you were studying japense and watched it, it would help. or if you watched it a lot you'd be familiar with the flow of the language whlie you learned it later on.

I studied Japanese , and had a chance to study in Hokkaido . At this point I still understand basic conversation which is why I see the things I see in subs/dubs . (Not just anime of course.....)

I disrespect and never think anything of it. I respond because you still pm'd me after I said I have the right to ignore. Im not an that much of an ass. Im not judging. You have a preference and I simply think its a bad one.

What you're comparing cannot be compared. They are 2 very different things fundamentally.

In this case of matter, its like saying K-on is better than something like Rurouni Kenshin or even cowboy bebop . I guarantee you that there are people who will back this statement up. But guess what, regardless of Opinion, this is indeed rubbish.

Anyways, I'm done debating about this.

I agree. I've watched many dubs in my life, and I actually always take a look at them when they become available. And yes, thats exactly why most dubs suck. But specifically for Japanese and how the Japanese language itself works. It's almost impossible to get everything if it were to be dubbed any other language.

Ie. Saying Hime and then it as to hide it, he says -gaki for Hime-gaki. This is impossible for probably any language I believe, obviously in english.

Some anime don't ever have this problem, but anything that isn't its original (specifically animation and language) will lose its CREATED value great or small no matter what.

Also agree ,

Unless the writer himself had genuine interest in the dub , which is rare these days , but I think that's the closest we'll ever get lol .

In all fairness to dub quality (not excusing the often less then stellar actor performance though) it's very tricky to write a dub script that both matches the lip movements and makes sense.

Compare:

"Watashi wa e-ru desu"

to

"I am L"

The easiest English translation is a 3 syllable uttering, while the Japanese line is a 7-8 syllable one, depending on if L leaves out the "su" in desu (never watched Death note myself, so I'm not sure if he does or not)

That's just one sentence out of thousands that must both be translated and made to match lip movements, I give the script writers a lot of credit for the job they do. Now the voice actors are often terrible, but that's another issue all together.

My thoughts on dub/sub in general (was talking about avatar the last air bender, but I'm lazy so I'll just copy/pasta)

As a cartoon it gets 9/10.

As an anime (watched by non-Japanese speakers, if it hypothetically was an anime and not an American cartoon) it looses a lot of its strength because of the language and cultural barriers.  One of Avatar's greatest strengths is the snappy dialogue and Americanisms mixed in with Avatar's unique setting that makes it a hit.  Unless you know a ton about Japanese culture and have a strong grasp of the language, many nuances are lost, and many jokes just don't make sense/aren't funny.  Of course there are jokes and such that are universal or easily translated but just look at the English release of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.  There were like 10 pages of notes in the back, explaining all the subtle references and uniquely Japanese humor.

The same goes for Avatar, when you watch the English version, you are getting the original; the creator's vision, without any stripping down (which is a inevitable process when something is dubbed into another language or even subtitled).  IMO Avatar would be a less then stellar anime (again taken from the perspective of a non-native viewer, forgotten quickly.  5-6/10

CLANNAD was, is, and always will be my favorite anime. I almost drowned in my own tears, believe me. I'm not heartless.
