the inexplicable power boosts to bring characters that would otherwise be irrelevant has been a common theme since Z began. It reached its first fever pitch with kid trunks/goten somehow being Super Saiyans (so they could be relevant in buu saga) and it's the same old song and dance with like c17 being able to push Son Goku into ssjb even though he should have got one shot by a fart from his base form. Sure Piccolo being a 1000x better trainer than Whis makes no sense but do you know what the alternative to this is? Basically being GT where it's the Son Goku(+vegeta) show.
The bar set by Son Goku and Vegeta is so insanely high that there's no way you can elevate all these characters to a relevant power level in a way that makes sense and doesn't piss people off, so just get it done. I'd rather Master Roshi randomly become a multi-galaxy buster that actually matters than be moon buster fodder that isn't participating in the story at all. Same goes for all the other minor characters. It's a good start to making it feel more like Dragonball again.
One problem I have with the show is the recycled arc (tournament again, shades of Bleach here, even with the different format and higher stakes...) and the way too short fights, I loved the powering up and talking in Z. There's also less fighting overall, look at SSJ2 Son Goku vs SSJ2 Majin Vegeta, that fight wasn't even one of the longer ones, but even if you cut out all the 'bs' it was like a solid 30-40 minutes of them just beating the shit out of each other. It was brutal. Meanwhile in Super you get a kamehameha, a desperate energy blast spam, a few bullshit abilities/tricks and a couple of punches to the face, and it's over.. sigh. Fights can be longer than an episode.
Overall I rate the show 7/10 because something is better than nothing and I don't have anything better to watch.
Loses 1 point for above mentioned reasons, and another point for the random infuriating retcons like hurr durr only a few planets with life on them, portara fusion has a timer now even though it doesn't, etc.
And another point for the animation. Z just had intensity. You could feel moments like when Son Goku punched Nappa in the stomach, compare that to Vegeta killing Ginyu in super...lol...wtf even was that?
