He has been in numerous episodes before. He might just be an anime person. I can't remember reading about him in the manga.

his in the manga too, if you're talking about the afro shinigami. He came out around Shinji - Ichigo talk for the first time.

His release is pointless.

It would most likely never be used in the manga.
I know you troll our manga thread for spoilers, so you know the top brass are about to throw down...

There's really no need to show his release, as he would be destroyed in a blink of an eye...
So meh, who cares if they showed it in the anime.

he's basically filler. Nobody likes/knows him, he's just there to take up space for congruity while the real fighters are gone
