Hrm Gai 8 gates was used with exhaustion i wonder if fully healthy he would have been even more powerful? Lee was carrying him around then he went between 1-4 gates to save kakashi then 7 gates and was injured then finally 8 gates.

I know the 3rd gate or so heals you but that cant heal you to 100% otherwise you could just spam it go 7 fight then quickly go to 3 then none and recover?
