wut I don't remember that happening
although it has been awhile since I watched it
It's heavily implied that they drowned in the lake. That makes the ending have more impact anyway so I decided to interpret it as canon.
- It's unlikely that Sora could have rescued Haru from such deep waters and somehow carry him to safety when she couldn't even rescue herself.
- Sora carries the bunny doll with her on the train in the final scene even though she tore it to pieces earlier and left it in her room. It's very likely that the train scene is a metaphor for their journey into the afterlife.
- The abandoned house with the room still trashed and with unmade beds suggests they never went back.
The big flaw in the theory is that text message that their friends received of course. It just doesn't seem fake to me so I have really no idea what the writers thought.
My guess is that the they couldn't find a good way for the ending to be ambiguous without making it feel forced so they went for conflicting facts instead which is
never good.
