If you think about it, Korra hasn't actually beaten anybody in the entire series.

Amon got away and would have succeeded (and probably come back even stronger) if his brother didn't explode the boat they were on (assuming they are dead)
Unalaq-vaatu was defeated by korra-raava (granted I'm not even sure Aang could have defeated Vaatu in a 1 on 1 battle).
And Zaheer was bested by the air acolytes.

Not trying to say Korra is weak, she just hasn't been able to go toe to toe with any big baddie until the end thus far.

No, it shows she's matured. She won't waste her time if korra isn't ready to face the strain, because she's better able to tell when she should charge through obstacles, and when to just do nothing.

Does anyone remember the lesson boomie tried to reach ang, about why he allowed himself to stay imprisoned even though he could break out at any time he wants? I think Toph learned that exact lesson, there's a time to push, and a time to be passive and wait for the right time.
