Aizen sent nnoitra to find the vast lord in the flashback, if a vast lord was really that powerful then there would have been no chance for nnoitra to bring him back.

They even used the silhouette of ulquirra to symbolize a vast lord.



Also as a note to everybody. You can just call them by english, vast lord. vasto lorde is just part of japanese accent >_< same way they said bounto instead of just bount
