The dolls were soulless homunculi being powered by Philosopher Stones. I don't recall it ever explaining the process of making a homonculus during the series. My personal take on it was that the other Homunculi made from pieces of Father's personality were given purpose by those pieces of personality and then life from the Philosopher Stones . The dolls didn't have any life to them before being infused with the Philosopher Stones and they still didn't have purpose after, which just made them mindless killing machines. The only ones who really ever talked about the dolls were the Generals at Central Command and they obviously didn't have a fucking clue about them. Father told them what to do knowing full well that they would just fucking kill everything they saw. I think the dolls in general were just a ruse, just another way for Father to manipulate Central Command into believing immortality was a possibility for them. They wouldn't serve any sort of purpose to him and I can't see any other reason he'd even bother making them.
That last part with Ed using transmutation on himself always seemed a bit off to me. Every other instance of someone being brought to the gate was because they tried to revive someone from the dead, other forms of human transmutation (making philosopher stones) never brought people to the gate so that part always seemed like lazy writing. Perhaps they were implying that he was trying to bring back Al there or something but I really don't know. It's an anime and sometimes you gotta just look past shit like that. I do agree that was odd though and it never seemed right to me either.
I was pretty sure at one point they said the dolls were homonculi but I'm not positive, it's been a year or so since I've watched the whole thing.
Good talk, I'm going to bed man. Hopefully someone can shed some light on the Ed instance of transmutation at the end of the series for me as well, I'm still clueless as to how the fuck that worked.
You're confusing fma with fmab now
dolls = homunculus
I'm pretty sure the army made the dolls, which is why the scientist was testing them out and the general was saying well this is a test in itself and released ALL the dolls
They were human transmutation
