Read the light novels, you'll be a lot happier that way.

It's pretty awesome.

It's not a bad anime.

It's just a huge ripoff of .hack//sign

The story is decent, and in nearly ever instance the written story has more detail than the video form of the same story...
Manga/Light Novel > Anime 9.9 out of 10 times

Personally I think there's enough differences between the two that it isn't really a rip off...

Sure, they share their similarities, but doesn't everything? If you look close enough you'll find cases like this all over.

Even if two people had the exact same idea, and started writing a book from the exact same start point, those stories are going to be extremely different in the end.

Personally, I enjoyed the story in Sword Art Online, but it's not going to be the absolute best thing you've seen/read in your life. I suggest everyone that finds the genre interesting gives it a chance and judges from their on their own.

Anime is entertainment, who cares if 95% of the population likes it, who cares if they hate it. It all comes down to you and what you enjoy. If you give something a shot, and watch a few episodes, you can always drop it later.

Would you rather give something a chance because you thought it was slightly interesting and end up dropping it, or would you prefer skipping something that you may absolutely fall in love with because it sounds over-hyped or got bad reviews?

tl;dr If it looks slightly interesting to you, give it a shot. You can always drop it later.

I dont get why people only watch animies based on others opinions. If there is an anime that you find the least interresting, simply try it out and see for yourself. If I did what you are doing now I'd miss so many good animies (not referring to SAO).

This really comes back to what I said earlier

I don't think it makes sense to either do something or avoid doing something, based on its popularity, at all.

At most, you should view a hype as "this is a thing that exists"
Should not make illogically spontaneous decisions based on the opinions of others who you probably don't even trust; look into it on your own and make them for yourself.

Maybe "rip off" was a harsh word .

But honestly there are very subtle differences.

I'm not trying to down talk anything or give anyone advice on what or what not to watch, im just sharing my insight on something I've felt i've seen 4+ times in different settings, and played 6+ times .

Like you said , "Even if two people had the exact same idea, and started writing a book from the exact same start point, those stories are going to be extremely different in the end."

Doesn't mean we just go and ignore the similarities . Because the similarities in anime is what defines our taste overall , and the differences that make it unique of course .

Indeed.

I've gotta admit, I loved both the .hack animes, and the SAO Light Novels! The similarities may have been what drew me to both.

You sir, are better at explaining things than I am. But, I'm fairly confident we are thinking along the same lines. I apologize if any of my post seemed like it was "attacking", I was simply trying to point out that he should give it a shot if the synopsis piques his interest.

rip off was definitely a harsh word specially when from what i can see both series began in 2002 although sao was a web novel until 2009
