He just left his released stage.. conveniently making a sweet escape in dust mode? idk, he was just too awesome of a character to just kill off like that.
Maybe it's just me but for some reason it seems like he would help them now... maybe open a garganta or something... Probably not going to happen though.

I think that Ulquiorra finally realized what Ichigo was talking about when he referred to the heart.
He reached out to Orihime, and asked if she feared him. (We could see how sad his eyes were). I think he realized the
kindness of humans when she said 'I'm not scared'. He thought to himself -- 'I see'. He even bites his lip when she says this.
He even tried reaching out to her in the end.. symbolic of a certain understanding and final peace among his hollow and their humanity.
Perhaps this symbolizes that humans and hollows aren't so different after all.
Then he vanished, too weak to maintain his form.
That is my take on it, at least.
