I used to have a little blurb in my profile: if you watch one piece all the way to the first major arc and don't like it, then it might not be the show for you.
But so far everyone I know IRL and on the net that has gotten past the slow start of the introduction episodes (introducing the main base of his crew and their trials/tribulations) and watched through the first major arc (about a man named arlong) ends up loving the series.
You gotta look at the series from a different PoV though. Think of it not as a childs shounen, but as an escape-from-reality tale of high adventure and great drama/action. The series has a set of really deep stories that intertwine with each other almost flawlessly. Unless you pay close attention, though, you might not notice (and kids never do....but my older brother caught on)
And as the series goes on it only gets better...The underlying stories become more prevalent, the drama gets grittier and the villains get nastier.
I could write a book about this shit.
and @ aydar, would it be hard to believe that every arc in one piece is generally better than the last?
Because it pretty much is.
