because its a manga and he's not the main character however just by him being there shows something significant on his part needs to be done

gai was there to ward off itachi and kisame and eventually be the one to defeat the latter. the way he was built also suggest he was just about the only one capable of doing so too especially outside of the gokages(not all ofc :P)

his 8 gates should definitely prove to be something necessary

Naruto will definitely defeat madara with some silly tricks, maybe clone replacement
