I think you guys are interpreting HALFWAY POINT the wrong way. Just because it took 600 chapter to get half way, doesn't mean it's going to take 600 to finish. Keep in mind that a lot of the early chapters were testing the water and ultimately defining the crew and their personalities/relationships...
And the halfway declaration was awhile back IIRC. So while the STORY is probably more than half way finished, it doesn't guarantee another 600 chapters.
edit: a good example of this was the thriller bark arc. It was awesome, introduced a new member to the crew, and got him affixed with the other members. IMO it was one of the fastest arc's but it still did alot of story telling. Oda is getting better at melding these things together so they take less time. The build up to the sand arc was insanely long, and even longer to finish.
This past arc was mildly long, but only because we've seen more story in this last arc than like every other arc combined.
