He was never trying to kill Sasuke, he was trying to drive him into a corner so he could get orochimaru out of him. In the end he didn't kill him and ended up giving him some of his powers.

he was never against sasuke or else he wouldn't encourage sasuke to get stronger to defeat him......he planned the whole battle out to make sasuke feel good about himself (j/p)

Never said, he was just sick with a disease, that's why he was so weak. That's why he died, Sasuke barely had a chance even when he was sick
