Well I don't think we've ever seen his eye while using that jutsu. But I could be wrong. Keep in mind that he had one eye covered before, and not for an explained reason. Obviously the eye socket worked since he has a rinnegan in it now. Maybe he was using the MS in that eye. It would explain the lack of sharingan eye shots in this latest fight. If he IS using the MS for that technique, its most likely eternal too, considering how often he uses it.

the other eye housed a sharinghan which he gave up to use izanagi when he faced konan
i believe he hides that part of his face along with his body due to how fucked up it is iirc when he showed that part of the face during his speech about "madara" losing to gain power for the future it was like blackened or something
but ofc it could be MS but i dont think so seeing as how he has no problem switching eyes out especially with his near unlimited supply
he can have an ems and chose to use a technique others dont know about as opposed to the 3 MS techniques that seem to be a staple with the MS, so who knows we may see him forced to use them now but as to why he wouldnt use them vs minato lol who knows.
