it is a rank... you have to pass several exams and testing and be a genius to get into that rank (itachi for example).......

they're the assassin group,..... ALL GROUPS/NINJAS serve under the kage of the village, which in this case is the hokage.......jounins chunnins and gennin's carry out low ranked ninja missions like escorts missions.... anbu carry out top missions a and s ranked stuff for "national security"

Itachi was the leader of the anbu at like 13 or 15. Its not like you have to be itachi's level to be a member of the anbu, u gotta be about his level to be the leader of the anbu

I remember this in detail in the anime from like the very first arc. Jounin only carry out low level missions when they are with genin. Of course there are exceptions when there aren't very many ninja in the village, but most of the time it goes like this.

S: Jonin
A: Jonin
B: Jonin chuunin
C: chuunin genin
D: chuunin genin

Anbu can be assigned to any mission really, but they're usually the national defense and reserve force for when the village gets attacked. Anybody from chuunin or Jounin can be an anbu.

itachi was leader cuz he was the best of the best..... anbu is a rank higher than jounin.

I always thought ANBU was a job of sorts, similar to the medical-nins.

Obviously you'd need incredible skills to join (presumably all the members are Jounin, though I guess there could be exceptions) but I don't remember it being specifically said that ANBU was a rank (at least in the same way Jounin, Chunin, and Genin are).

i thought that anbu was just like a specialized jounin...in before wrong.

this was my view on them as well. Ninjas that are only given special assignments. Like assasinations and secret stuff
