dont be like that money has nothing to do with it ive spent hundreds on ftp games.. 2moons especially back in the day...
i've just noticed that ftp mmo rpgs seem to always lack in content they are designed to go on forever but feel like just take forever. stories are generally completely lost and never look, feel, or play as well as a smoothly tweaked and tuned console release
tbh, i haven't found a single console rpg I've thoroughly enjoyed since the ps2. AC2 was unexpectedly great, but it has 0 replay value, especially since all the feather/chest collection is essentially a huge run-to-the-marked-location, collect, repeat~ grind.
whereas resonance of fate seems to be based around replaying'n replaying the same storyline, and others like atelier rorona force a time limit on you, with 0 endgame - essentially you spam the cheapest/fastest items to produce, and assignment's cleared. strict time restrictions on taking any sort of exploratory action with a terrible ass combat system akin to ff13's X-mashing, and you get what could've been an otherwise enjoyable game into needlessly complicated bullshit. albeit cute bullshit. demon's souls has a ruthlessly punishing game system, where you're basically forced to replay ad nauseum, the same levels over and over, until you get used to where various monsters spawn, how they attack, and just hope you pass some of the stupidass horde/flood rushes of mobs by pure luck and not get stun/block locked. the mulitplayer is absolutely ridiculous, and doesn't encourage leveling up to any extent because then you'll outlevel the tier where the most players are, in an already dwindling game. if anything it's like wander around this medieval world and hope to fuck black phantoms / infernofag phantoms don't pop into your game to wreck whatever meagre progress you just made.
killzone 3? fps, fun multiplayer. that's really one of the only games on ps3 i don't regret buying. fuck the rest of it's "online multiplayer" which is essentially trophy whoring bullshit, with 0 actual online gameplay.
folklore was alright. sorta limited exploration'n annoying camera angles, but otherwise fun.
i can go on, for 20+ other titles. all of which got rave reviews, but really, just felt like a fucking waste of time with shallow mechanics, story; 1/2 of which could've been released on ps2 and utterly failed to make use of the ps3's graphic & cpu potential.
waiting for rune factory: oceans, maybe catherine, definitely that alice game, ace combat 7. beyond that, idfk.
tl;dr, no point in buying a console game for replayability at $60 when endless grind f2ps are a dime a dozen. sure they lack story, but they make up for that with the inter-player connectivity & interaction. plus the thrill of pking and raging all those srsmode tryhards, carebears, and qqers at large.
why go back to a single console game, when you can just continue the grind? where you get rewarded for time spent, (or money spent, in the absence of time, hurr), sometimes skill, and all these various trophies to lord over the rest of the population?
the sheer competitiveness of it - and the volume at which it's available, hands down beats out this generation's console games, to me.
sure the mechanics in f2ps are by and large the same, but there's just so many different variations, you can keep skipping around until you find one fun enough to hang around in for a bit. best of all, without paying a dime.
