While I do think Leorio was the comic relief in the beginning of the series, I wouldn't put him in the same category as characters such as Usopp or Kuwabara as an example.
Sure, he acts like an idiot, but they do hint that he is actually very logical in his thought process unlike Gon who just goes by instincts. I am highly curious as to what his nen powers developed into. For all we know his new powers might be useless in combat and he may become some type of support character. This could be interesting in its own right.

When I first watched the original series he was my favorite character, along with Gon, during the Hunter Exam.
