Knowing of it and seeing it for yourself are two entirely different things. We knew he was a hot shot in the new world but we didn't know anything about him or to what degree he was remarkable.

Many of us think that blackbeard could become one of the last main antagonist of the series, but we don't know how exactly the final battles will play out and to what degree he will become that threat.

This is the world of one piece, we threw the "that's not realistic" detector out the window when we all started watching this show and you know it. And even if we hadn't, within the contexts of the One Piece world this actually is realistic considering we're discussing whitebeard of all people.

Losing a part of your face and being decapitated are two drastically different things. You're using a strawman argument and nothing more. Whitebeards fate was sealed when it happened, but the fact that he carried on for so long shows his resolve. That's the bottom line.
