now i thought nagato unlocked the rinnegan by himself when he killed the 3 ninjas who attacked his crew when he was a young boy..where does it say tobi gave him the rinnengan?

He is completely worthless to the storyline apart from giving kakashi sharingan

I'm guessing madara gave nagato his rinnegan before he died

Madara said something about awakening his rinnegan before he died or something like that in the recent chapter
he may have given it to nagato to try and perfect its abilities so upon his revival he would have control over the rinnegan

I'm still sticking to my theory of how zetsu is the main villain of the story
and everyone else are pawns to help him reach his goal
(my guess is he is a reincarnation of the elder son of the sage or a spawn from his eyes to continue the battle that started between the elder and younger)

because it makes sense to put in a useless character to develop kakashi

i think that Tobi is the Original Zetsu. and black zetsu and white zetsu are simply his creations with the powers of the senju and uchiha
