I mean, do people have to walk up and confirm the death every time? He was crushed and they just left him there. He also never returned to the village... I think if he lived he would have come back. His final moments contained him doing some pretty cool shit for the sake of the village.

If he died, especially in a time of war, I think we need a little bit more confirmation than "He was crushed, game over"
If he was just left there, The secrets of the sharingan could have been revealed to anyone who could have recovered the body...

and because of the lack of recovery, we can't rule out that he survived somehow, maybe some other person corrupted his mind, or had him under a genjutsu, or w/e making it so he couldn't go to the village for whatever reason...

I bet Tobi is part of zetsu

Let's just say Madara was the one who found and corrupted him. I'd imagine it going something like this:

Madara: You've bee out for a while.
Obito: How am I alive? Thanks for saving me.
Madara: I'll just cut to the chase, you should really just destroy Konoha.
Obito: Why?
Madara: Everyone abandoned you. Your friends left you for dead because they thought you were worthless. The whole world thinks you're worthless. Konoha always thought of you as a burden.
Obito: Hell, even I thought I was dead. I definitely told them to go on because they'd be in danger if they left me there. Nice try noob.
Madara: Don't you want to learn the secrets of the Sharingan to destroy Konoha?
Obito: Meh, I've got no desire to do that really. Konoha hasn't done anything bad to me. If you'll excuse me, I'd like to get back to my friends now.

Another thing, why the hell would he even bother with Obito if he wants an apprentice? Obito is fucking worthless.
