Amazing how this whole arc was designed to make a point about human nature.

i love how thought provoking this ark is
when i watch it i see a metaphor for japanese involvement in world war two

edit.
dont forget the was but a child

Victim to ignorance, motivated by instinct; I just cant think of him as a villain in the traditional sense. Yes his actions were horrific but, his only motivation was basic instinctual programming. To see him grow beyond an ant to become human in his last moments. Then to see the purest of all human to show him such true compassion as he had never known were possible.

I think the way they use sad is more towards "moving/touching"?

Also I guess you can argue he never had the chance to think for himself until the end, comparing it to Hitler is very extreme.

He did, the first action he ever made was murder and that was influenced by no one at all. pouf is possibly the only one that ever tried to control him and looking back at every single one of his actions he failed miserably on every account.

fine, let's compare him to kim jong-un instead, a kid who has power over an entire nation who's been raised into thinking he owns the entire world. that's more similar I guess. You think anyone would be sadden if he died in the arms of his girlfriend? i wouldn't.

To be fair, the ants primarily wanted to cause a massive genocide against humans. they eventually changed because... feels... but after killing hundred thousands of humans.

Netero's actions were justified and Meruem's death wasn't sad.

that's like crying for Hitler's death if at the last second he realized what he was doing was wrong.

No it wasn't sad. I would say its happy, both because the menace to humans is gone and because you feel the happiness the king feels. Think about it, its very hard to empathize with the king, who considers himself an ant, until the ending itself. Komugi being blind always thought of him as human, and in this scene her vision of the king overrules the vision we have had of him for the entire arc. That is further exemplified by the fact that the conversation was in the dark in the eyes of the viewer. Its the only scene where you can employ a deep empathy for the king. The fact that he crafted this scene to do this is absolutely genius; incredibly. Shows his mastery of storytelling.

Netero's actions were completely just. Its different from crying over Hitler's death because its a different emotion and you can't empathize with Hitler (none of us knew the guy). Since this is a story, we were allowed a glimpse into the mind of the antagonist. My eyes watered, and I would say my emotions were closer to happy than anything else.

Yeah, HxH does a really good job with this. He does it without going overboard, which is a common flaw with anime and manga.

I'm not sure Hisoka is a villain. He kind of just does things for his own reasons, whether antagonistic or helpful to Gon and company. Probably my favorite character though.
