Kakashi probably only took attention to Naruto because his favorite student defected. I don't think Kakashi really cared anything for Naruto in part 1. Not that Naruto needed Kakashi to become strong anyways. He had Jiraiya for that.

im pretty sure the deal was that jiraiya would take over narutos training since the beginning. so he didnt really need to pay much attention to naruto
