Sealed Form of his sword = wooden staff
Released form = actual sword
Firewall most likely sustained through spirit energy


He definetely is not keeping his sword released.

Just because he walks around with a staff, that doesn't necessarily mean that he can't walk around with it as an actual sword without keeping it released. The release itself is most likely the fire element of the sword.
