True, but I'm sure Akira Toriyama wanted to keep it traditional since Piccolo has been a character since DB. And if I remember correctly Pikkon is still dead. And it also became evident that the whole team was just a distraction to motivate Goku and Vegeta. Which is most likely why Majin Buu got eliminated so early for not being able to spell his name.

Holy shit that was a good fucking episode. Totally not what I was expecting Goku to do. Not at all. And it kind of makes me wonder if Hit is going to win the tournament. I doubt it but the possibility is there. I mean Goku still has Kaioken X100 to use if he can go that far yet.
