Preferably school life, but not a complete must.
Outrageous situations not minded.
Drama/great feels not minded either, but not a must

examples:

kill la kill - for the wtf moments.
seitokai yakuindomo - didn't think I'd like the sex jokes and stuff (that it would be too echi), but I think it's hilarious.
great teacher onizuka - older show, but enjoyed it, good drama moments, good humor.
maria holic - good humor.

Doesn't have to be purely comedy.

Azumanga Daioh - Completely random, but hilarious

Maria Holic Alive is the sequel to maria holic.

Friend lent me her set of Claymore CDs. After watching 26 episodes in the last two days, I only really have a couple of complaints; namely, the characters kept explaining the situation, like they thought the viewers couldn't think for themselves, and there were only 26 episodes.

Besides those two complaints, I really enjoyed it, and it fit my previous preferences almost perfectly.

I will still check out the ones that were previously mentioned, however, I'm wondering if there are any other shows that would fit that criteria better, now that you have Claymore as a perfect example?

You may enjoy Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero. Set in a modern world, but the fights are medieval weaponry(Swords, lances, bows, ect.)

Couple others that aren't quite exactly what you are asking for but still good:
Elfen Lied(Strong female, excessively violent, but not quite what you are describing)
Hellsing Ultimate(Seras because a complete badass later on in it, yes there are "gunfights" but it's the overwhelming power of the 2 main characters and when they fight as vampires instead of with guns that make me think to recommend it with what you asked for.)
