Well Akira only mentioned that they won't become stronger than a God. Now I can see that happening at the very end of the series though. Maybe Goku becomes the next God of Destruction or other kind of deity. Or maybe he becomes some kind of guardian of the universes. Maybe in the most powerful non-God in all the universes. There are so many routes he can go. And I mean Goku and Vegeta most likely won't cap at their current level. I'm sure we can at least expect one more transformation before we see them peak.

Edit: And the reason why people think Trunks is coming back is because Akira mentioned that the next arc incorporates the future.
