Personally i feel it ended after the Chunin Exam arc. After that it just became filler episode after filler episode. Shippuden was boring to watch for me. I tried watching it many times, and always ended up dropping it due to boredom.(and filler.. can't forget the filler...)

But I really lost major interest when Sasuke went emo and left.
The manga would have been 100000x better if they had just left it as it was (sasuke and naruto and sakura as a team, each with vastly different personalities)
They could have kept sasuke kind of emo and shit, they didn't have to spend 300+ chapters on him running away and being orochimaru's bitch
