honestly attack on titan is amazing. i would definitely watch tenga topa gurren lagann but not first. sword art online and log horizon are both good to watch as well. I honestly think the first thing you should watch is bebop though.

Death Note is what got me into anime. Honestly there are so many good shows so I dont know what to reccomend as a starter besides that, but if u dont mind me making a long list id be happy to do so.

fate/stay night and full metal alchemist are ones you can easily get into (and get addicted to!)

your best bet is really to watch the high rated main stream animes first
going by peoples preferences and not only mine that would be
Death note
Code geass
angel beats
elfen lied
maid sama (if you are into romance/comedy)

If you want good movies which you can watch with other people who are not into anime they will still enjoy these for sure
