"check other people"?
Looking at people while they're eating. Basically staring at them. It's the same kind of thing as "pointing" somebody, it's rude here, but it's like on a whole new level over there.
My friend had another cool encounter with an older salarymen ( mid 40s ).
He was walking in the other direction, so this salarymen was staring at him ( omfg 6'5 scary foreigner ) and my friend looked at him, their eyes met. So the men was found out !
What he did .5 seconds after realizing it, was to look at his watch ( he didn't have one ) . He noticed it too, so he did the next best thing REALLY fast and that is to just pass his hand in his hair. Really subtle guy.
Anyhow, after they passed eachother my friend looked behind him to check the man out, turns out they both had the same idea. So he looked at him and smiled.
The salarymen then proceeded to rapidly turn his head and up his walking pace a little bit.
