Maybe it's only popular because it's one of the first things many people encounter that they completely don't understand and have their mind blown and it makes them rewatch it several times and they form an inexplainable love for it? *shrug*

well, there are obviously enough people around that can identify with it, and thats why they give it a high score. the insane production value is part of it as well
of course there are those that value it highly because they think its a mindfuck, but i'd like to think that they are in the minority
pretty much like lain, nearly everyone sees something else in it
just because you didnt like the concept doesnt mean its necessarily "garbage"

Despite only liking loli fan service and the like, this Anime was actually really good mainly because of the meaning behind it.

Art is meh, but when it comes to the point, you sometimes overlook it.

Saw a trailer, that was more than enough for me. I rate it Shit/10 , don't even need to watch it.

The only other animes I give this rating to are code geass and elfen lied b/c they are also infinitely overrated.

This^ + i loved the whole Guitar as a weapon was pretty cool.

Stylistically, FLCL is a masterpiece.

If you agree with the above statement, you'll love the show.
If you don't, you probably won't enjoy FLCL too much.

The plot is relatively thin compared to a primarily plot driven piece, and I wouldn't spend too much time looking into it, but in terms of style and execution it just flat out works incredibly well imo.
