ya just sexist
i think it's mostly just that you don't see female MC's breaking out of their norm/most common roles.
being in romance/shoujo series to stuff like comedies, horror and slice of life.
they're mostly just side characters, love interests or maybe part of the MC group. (probably the biggest exception is Mahou Shoujo)
so it's probably just a genre interest thing.
stuff like Ghost in the Shell or like Seirei no Moribito where women are the leads are also genres you'd mostly see a male mc in. (tbh if those characters were male it probably wouldn't have made that huge of a difference)
