Shane Black has directed good movies too
Yet they reference possibly his worst
I mean, lets be honest though, the guy mostly did cheesey action movies. He did all the Lethal Weapons, the Last Boyscout, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. I guess they figured IM3 is his biggest/most relevant movie. I like most of those movies for what they are, but it's a totally different ball game these days and that cheese style of action doesn't play so well with audiences looking for a more realistic approach. The exception being if you go WAY over the top with something like The Expendables, and even outside of the first one, those have been flops.
He did do Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (this revived RDJ's career and brought him back to relevance helping him land the Iron Man job), which is one of my favorite movies ever, and probably why he got the Iron Man 3 job in the first place. More recently he did Nice Guys which was critically acclaimed and I fucking loved it, but it was one of those movies that didn't play nearly as well with your average viewer. Just seems like a weird pick for this..... the guy has only done 3 movies in the past 20 years, and two of them were comedies, and the other was Iron Man 3, which was terrible. Doesn't exactly give me a lot of hope, but even though it's not too relevant, I'd say from "The writer who brought you Lethal Weapon and the Nice Guys" since that throws in one of the biggest action movies of all time that most people know, and then a more recent/relevant title that did well with critics, vs throwing out one of his worst films. We'll see how it is, but the guy has some talent and maybe he can pull this out. It could be just him looking for a paycheck though because works been slow for him.
