I wouldn't really call it a surprise. Been well known for like 6 months now. I am super excited though.

Shit movie.

*Spoiler*

Main character story line was not interesting and it took almost the whole duration of the movie to even start becoming invested in it. I almost wanted to turn it off in the first 20 minutes. They tried to hard to play on to the emotional side without first even introducing the characters properly.
Also nothing made sense based on the scientific narrative they gave. They talked about multi dimensions but it didn't even explain half the shit like the conscious arm.

And then its link to Cloverfield was a side note of the whole thing

my guess is since we are now dealing with dimensions now....each movie is in its own dimension

and the shepard caused it, ripping holes in reality while trying to get infinite energy....imo

All the movies happen at the same time on the same world

This movie in particular warped to a different dimension though
The dimension they moved to didn't have the aliens, just war and an energy crisis.
Then when they went back to their dimension it was the same one as the other movies with the aliens.

i thought of that too... but in the starting dimension they also had an energy crisis and were on the brink of war, that was the point of the shepard..to get a infinite energy supply

my guess about each movie being a different dimension, there seemed to be no mention of war or any crisis.. just boom.. monsters..

altho, i suppose each movie could be in different timelines.......... going back to the guy in the interview.... "could cause problems in the past, present and future"

maybe the 4th movie will make it clearer

Honestly I wouldn't hope for much considering it was never supposed to be a series.

Cloverfield is a stand alone movie.

10 cloverfield Lane was never supposed to be in the same universe but JJ agreed to put it into the cloverfield universe after pressure from the studio so it would actually be made and released.

I assume this movie was made in a similar fashion. Either he had an idea and had to do it this way in order to make it, or he was pressured into making it because "well you already made 2 in the series, you have to continue now."

Wasn't that bad by itself, but as a cloverfield movie it was a joke. Like 10 cloverfield lane(which in itself was an alright thriller but absolutely sucked as science fiction/monster movie). If they want to make a cloverfield movie, they need to make a god damn cloverfield movie instead of shoehorning it into a completely unrelated movie. They did it twice now, what the hell?

Studios like brand recognition because it's safe and it sells (in their minds at least, and also probably the mind of the general public which is why it works).
