I hope it's true.
FA was generic as fuck, and they forced a lot of nostalgia down people's throats, and they got great reviews, some Oscar nods, and people fell in love for the first time, or all over again. Of course a bunch of criticism came out after a few weeks when the initial wave of nostalgia wore off and people noticed how vanilla of a movie it was, but the damage was already done with the ratings. I saw the movie on opening night, and was fairly disappointed. That was my own fault, I let the hype and the reviews and everything else get to me, and I let myself believe that it was going to be something special, and it just wasn't. I'm just done buying into the hype trains for most things. The only things I'm going to be overly hyped for are like movies by Nolan, Tarantino, maybe a Scorsese flick lol, but stuff that pulls at the childhood heartstrings isn't going to get me, and I'm going to try to go into them as unbiased as possible, so that if one is mediocre, I can enjoy it for what it is, and if one is truly fucking amazing, I can be blown away because I didn't see it coming.
That being said, I've done a pretty bad job in regards to Last Jedi. They pandered hard with FA, and they succeeded in their mission of ensuring the theaters would be packed for every single SW movie they make for the next decade at least. I'm hoping they take some more chances this time, and they stop relying so much on old material to ensure a good time, and they go out and try to create something new and give this movie a chance at being truly great. I'm optimistic, and that usually bites me in the fucking ass, but I'm still doing my best to avoid every piece of information about this film I can. I watched one o fthe trailers, wish I hadn't, but w/e, I haven't watched any of the new ones, haven't checked any reviews, or looked up anything online about it, or seen any of the actor interviews. Trying to go into this bitch as blind as possible, and it's comforting hearing it's got an 86 metacritic, because you're right, that's fucking fat lol, but I just have a difficult time trusting critics with this kind of shit.
Going to go see it ASAP. Just gotta figure out when I can escape from the wife and kid for a few hours.
I am constantly reading reviews of new movies. I'm basically a film junkie lol.
I do agree that The Force Awakens was very cautious and didn't stray away from the formula of Episode 4. It wasn't as good as Empire but it was good enough to wash that bad taste of the prequels out of a lot of fan's mouths. It is a solid 7.5-8/10 if I ignore my Star Wars Fandom bias. It is right between slightly above average and good imo.
I enjoy plenty of average movies if the material interests me. I've been a Star Wars fanboy since I was a little tyke.
For example, the prequels are not good movies. Revenge is the best of the three and it's around a 6.5/10 and that is me being generous. That being said, I love the movie and the other two shitty prequels. If The Last Jedi is an 8.5 or better on my rating scale I will probably set a record for longest erection.
