This is meant for general discussion over which review sites you use, if any, and their benefits/negatives.

I feel like I need to make this for a bit of discussion because I just learned something about rotten tomatoes that blew me away.

Apparently rotten tomatoes has a program that goes through a critics review and looks for keywords, if a critic doesn't use enough positive key words the review can be labeled as rotten even if the reviewer does actually like the movie and scores it high.

I really have no idea how rt is such a big movie site when everything they do is just so bad.

Does one really need more than IMDB & RT to review movies? (Aside from personal recommendations/word of mouth)

Honestly I just look to see whether it's really one sided like 3/10 or less or 8/10 or higher

Other than that I don't look any further than that and make a judgment only on that.

As people who actually like movies know rt is basically the worst.

Is it though? I haven't seen too many faults, other than movies like Wonder Woman. Otherwise it's quite good.

No site is perfect but Metacritic is my personal favorite.

It is usually pretty spot on with my how I feel about shows and movies.

Rarely see a 90+ which is how it should be tbh. Most 90%+ on RT are in the 70s on MC.

Is there any evidence of this claim, or just more RT hate? It's another source of information, but not one that's needed or anything. I don't think I've ever seen a critic give a positive rating, and it be labeled as rotten, or vice-versa... I mean, if you have evidence of this, I'd love to see it, but otherwise, it bothers me more than anything, when people just spread bullshit to try and convince everyone that their dislike of something is justified.

I don't have a direct link at the moment but there was a critic taking about how his positive review was listed as rotten which prompted me to look more into rt. RT isn't really secretive about how the site works, they just aren't really super open about it either.

A critic CAN pull quotes he wants prioritized on RT and he CAN rate it fresh or rotten if he wants, but if he doesn't care and just submits his review then apparently a RT staff member does it for them, designating fresh or rotten based on percentage of key words (imo claiming none of it is automated is complete bullshit considering how many reviews there actually are). I personally used to think it was done based off of a scale system but that's completely wrong. Its closer to basically a thumbs up or thumbs down system.

Essentially if a critic decides to... You know.. Criticise a movie, even if they like it their review can be listed as rotten.

Basic article describing how it works if you're to lazy or don't care enough to look into it yourself: http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/feature/a834719/rotten-tomatoes-problem/

I dont care about anyone's personal review of a movie. I watch trailers and read plot descriptions and decide for myself if i am interested or not.
