So I watched it over two sittings and I am not quite sure how this movie won an Oscar, can someone explain what they liked so much about it?

Oscars are politically motivated.

Black protagonists, gay people, poor community.
Everything an Oscar needs. If you throw in a retard, this would have been the best picture of the 21st century.

Remember when nightcrawler was nominated? That should of won best picture and gyllenhall should of won best actor for it.

It's a great film because it's a meditation over male stereotypes and masculine behaviour. If you think race plays an important part in the film you need to watch it again.

If you feel like the film is unworthy then present me with a better film that discuss the same themes in a similar fashion

The themes don't matter. It's about overall quality of film lol
You shouldn't give a film an Oscar because it describes a certain theme
