Lately I find I have been watching as many good documentaries as I can find. The topics that interest me the most lately seem to be based on nature, corruption, and the human condition; but I am open to any suggestions.

It's pretty hard to pick a favorite in such a broad genre but if I had to pick one it would be Dawg Fight. The movie is by Billy Corben (guy who made Cocaine Cowboys) and its about backyard fights in the ghettos of south Florida. It will officially come out March 12th, 2015 I was lucky enough to see it early and I must say it is the best documentary I have seen yet. Maybe it just hit home so hard because I grew up in that area of south Florida, maybe not idk either way 10/10 film.

I'm curious what your favorite documentary is and why? (Please no more than 3 recommendations)

Some of my favorites:

Inside North Korea
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0987374/
A crew of journalists sneaks into NK under the premise of being doctors. It's a insanely good look at conditions Koreans face everyday in the north under a brutal dictatorship.

A Film Unfinished
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568923/?ref_=nv_sr_1
A series of pictures and films are discovered that show unedited footage of life inside Jewish ghettos during WW2. What's so amazing is how much information it gives historians who are forced to reevaluate conditions in the ghettos. They were much worse than we originally thought, since the Nazis created propaganda films which historians had based their facts on.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493459/?ref_=nv_sr_1
This documentary analyzes the history of the MPAA and how they're used to bully small, independent films. Meanwhile, they give different ratings to high-paying films with similar content.

Worth looking into if you have time:

Restrepo
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1559549/
A documentary that follows a group of U.S. troops operating in the Korangal Valley during our war in Afghanistan.

The Union: The Business Behind Getting High
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1039647/?ref_=nv_sr_2
A history of marijuana and its illegality in the U.S.

Waiting for Superman
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1566648/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Filmmakers follow several students as they navigate the public education system looking for better opportunities.

Armadillo
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1640680/
War doc focused on a Danish group of soldiers. Better than Restrepo imo.

Exit Through The Gift Shop
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587707/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Focuses on Banksy and his art

The Cove
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1313104/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Exposes the horrible treatment of dolphins in Japan.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493459/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Shows how shitty the US ratings board for film is.

Dear Zachary
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1152758/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Heartbreaking story of a filmmaker who memorializes his murdered friend for that friend's unborn son.

The Ambassador
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2048877/
Danish filmmaker tries to infiltrate the African blood diamond trade.

The Act of Killing
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2375605/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Filmmaker lets original perpetrators of mass murder in Indonesia re-enact their cruelty out on film. These now old men speak proudly of rape, murder and torture.

Part one and two of the mods trilogy, "Dom kallas oss Mods" and "Ett anstÃĪndigt liv"

Part one shows a couple of charismatic 20 year olds in the 60's who drink alcohol, have sex, go to gigs, laugh at the average Joe while having no jobs etc
Part two is a ten years later follow up where everyone is either dead, drunk and useless or addicted to Heroine, it's pretty much the grimmest shit ever.

they are in Swedish but I think it should be possible to find with Eng sub, they are quite famous.

I also really enjoy Cineamania about obsessed movie buffs in New York, I love documentaries about obsessive people and these are extremly far out.

Thanks guys, lots of films I have seen and lots I haven't; will check them out and let you know what I think.

Not so much a fan of movies with subtitiles, but they sound interesting I'll give them a chance... although I'm afraid they will just put me to sleep.
