Yah that's a fair assessment. They didn't explain why living on a train was more viable than living underground, especially when avalanches and shit could derail the train.
WWZ was a better book. The movie moved too far from its source material. The book was an anthology of interviews of various survivors, not a single narrative. The stories were really cool and most of them didn't appear in the movie.
Cos if you lived underground, no one would need to work to keep the train going. Making em bored af causes problems imo.
Easier to visually show there's no where else to go except stay in train or advance forward, and each train room is unique, means something, has a purpose.
