I might try this show since I've heard it was great. Is it really though?

And also, should I watch the Last Airbender before I watch the legend of Korra?

It's pretty good. I would watch Last Airbender first.

I feel like the two are pretty even, each series with its strengths and weaknesses.
Korra is a little more mature and I thought the first book's premise was great. My only concern about Korra as a whole is it's kinda steam punk (I don't like steam punk).

Aang and Korra are pretty shitty avatars (power wise) if you consider how the show portrayed the other avatars.

I mean Roku was a beast.

As far as I know, the last airbender was a tv show and so was the legend of korra for a few seasons?

I think Ang was as powerful as any avatar, it's just that we saw him in action back when he was 10 to 12, that skews everything. Regardless, he finished the most powerful fire bender in the world without going back into the avatar state as he did for the previous battle.

I'm sure Korra will kick serious ass too eventually. She's still not as old as Roku was when he finished his training, and benders have improved a great deal since the Ang days.

It's really the only way of making an interesting avatar show, otherwise it would be dull seeing them owning everyone ez

This, you can't compare an adult who's finished all his training with a 10 year old who knows nothing but one element at the beginning of the series.
And when Korra begins, she's obviously much stronger than Aang was in the first few seasons of The Last Airbender.

I'm sure adult Aang was just as powerful as any of the other avatars.
