This.
I hate the huge margin for audio levels. One minute you can't hear a conversation, the next an explosion shakes the room.

If I "acquire" a file with subtitles I can't turn off, I will delete the file and look for another clean one.

Not for finnish films unless it's pre 60s since the guys sucked at recording sound back then. For rest, I usually prefer english subtitles just incase.

it depends on the film, really
but ordinarily if I am watching something in english, then no I will not put on subtitles only because it can be distracting

I never use subtitles for movies in english or spanish.
Don't even use them for french or italian movies even though sometimes there's something I don't get (the words I don't know I can usually understand from the context, but some times I do run across a sentence I'm not sure what it means). I used to do this with german films too, but I've lost the ability to do so; my german is rusty now and I struggle understanding german movies without subs.
I do use them for all the other languages though... and I do infact prefer to watch those films in their original language with subititles than watching them dubbed.

I can't watch a movie without subs.
I don't always read them, but I just need them there, for a strange reason.
