I'm looking for a 80s or 90 movie that I saw a while ago. Didn't get to finish it though.
It begins with a fight in prison church where two inmates have knives taped to their hands. One of them dies and the winner is in trouble for it. The winner was initially in prison for murder.
A lawyer who is interested in the case makes it his mission to prove the innocence of the inmate for the first murder.
One of the witnesses for the first murder is/was a crazy guy who claims to know who killed Kennedy, which made the court decide he was unfit to testify.

And that's all I really know. If somebody can point me in the right direction, this is driving me (and my girlfriend by proxy) nuts.

remember if the lawyer or either of the 2 inmates was black or white?

The lawyer was white not too sure about the inmates.

sounds similar to the Lincoln Lawyer. That's probably not it, but might as well check anyway.

Murder in the first?

Nope. He definitely killed the guy in the prison, but he wasn't supposed to be in prison to begin with, and that's their case.
