Which movies/directors failed, or didn't fail at breaking the fourth wall? It's usually pretty tricky to pull off.

Here are some I liked:

Mel Brooks had an obsession with, and was very good at breaking the fourth wall.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit: One of my all time favorite movies, cartoon Film noir with an annoying protagonist you could still get behind. There was nothing this movie could do wrong.

Funny Games: Some people had a problem with this move, but in my opinion.. when the Killer used the rewind button to undo his partners death I instantly fell in love with the movie. Movies always give us a protagonist who can defeat the odds and survive the impossible. The reality of it is, most of us who are put in a situation like that will die a terrible death..

I'll think of a few more in a bit.

close, but its when characters are aware that they have an audience and aknowledge it by dialogue with the audience

yup. They didn't acknowledge the audience in funny games, but they broke the fourth wall by rewinding the tape.

Also the wink when they were searching for the dog.
Gotta love haneke and that film, his interviews are also interesting

Its a cool, unique technique when used properly, but it can also be cheesy and annoying if done too much or too oftern.

PS, i hate theater
