When 1996's "Independence Day" ended, humankind had pulled itself out of the wreckage of an Earth pulverized by alien invaders and managed to eke out an improbable victory against their attackers. But director Roland Emmerich says that the marauders from space are coming back.

"Independence Day," with its patriotic tone and jaw-dropping scenes of New York, Washington and other major cities being blasted to powder by massive alien vessels, was such a colossal hit that rumors of a sequel have been floating around for years.

Emmerich himself, who also co-wrote and co-produced the original with Dean Devlin, has been talking about a follow-up as well -- and now he's revealed details about not one but two films to Entertainment Weekly.

The films, called "ID Forever Part 1" and "ID Forever Part II," have been written by Emmerich and Devlin and handed off to James Vanderbilt (who wrote Emmerich's upcoming "White House Down") for him to do a new draft. The movies are set 20 years after the original, as a distress signal sent by the original invaders as they went down to defeat finally reaches its destination -- which means more of the vicious extraterrestrials are soon on the way. Emmerich said:

"The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that's 20 or 25 years."

In those two decades, Emmerich said, the human race has rebuilt from the aftermath of the initial invasion, and found some uses for the technology that the first wave of aliens left behind:

"It's a changed world. It's like parallel history. (Humans) have harnessed all this alien technology. We don't know how to duplicate it because it's organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane."

And just who will be piloting that airplane? Emmerich hinted that a mix of returning characters like Bill Pullman's President (retired now, we presume) will be joined by new heroes, like the grown-up stepson of Will Smith's character from the first film:

"It's still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it's a little bit like the sons take over. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again (from the aliens)."

There's no timetable on when Emmerich will begin shooting parts two and three of his trilogy, but he did promise that "Part I" will end on a cliffhanger. As for what possible havoc the attackers can wreak this time, all the director said was that the aliens "do different things."

If it's done by emmerich, his films after ID4 have been 2012, 10,000 BC, The Day After Tomorrow, The Patriot, Godzilla

...will probably be pile of crap

He's like the worst movie director ever, dispite being given an immense budget every time, all his films are bad (although I don't completely hate all of them) and they get worse and worse every time.

I would definitely watch this if Will Smith was guaranteed to be in it. I just can't see anyone els taking the star roll in a movie he played so well in..

When was the last time you watched it?

I liked it too, but I was ~14 when it came out.. Never rewatched it, so I dunno if it's gonna hold up.

I watched independence day a year ago.
I was absolutely disgusted, easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
