I made a quick list. Wha'chu got? In defense of my list, it's compacted to fit directors I find consistent. There are 10000000 Movies I personally love, but the director of those films can't seem to produce anything of substance aside from that one exception.

Stanley Kubrick
Terry Gilliam
Milos Forman
Joel Coen
Joon-ho Bong
Sidney Lumet
Roman Polanski
David Cronenberg
Akira Kurosawa
Lucio Fulci
René Laloux
Peter Jackson
Hayao Miyazaki
Ridley Scott
Clint Eastwood
Alfred Hitchcock
Jim Jarmusch
Wes Anderson
Ji-woon Kim
Rob Reiner
Frank Henenlotter - DONT YOU DARE QUESTION ME!
Kevin Reynolds - Let's see if anyone is paying attention.

I've never seen anything by the bold'd director. Is this something I should remedy?

Yimou Zhang, is a visual god. :D

Also

Billy Wilder was great in the 50s/60s - check out The Apartment

and Francis Ford Coppola too - Apocolyse Now // Godfather//Outsiders

and yeah the thing I love about Yimou Zhang is that he doesnt really on Dialogue to tell the story

just pictures and hes a very good story teller because he really allows you to connect to the characters.
