He desires the north through a means that will actually grant him true power; the loyalty of the people he commands. Via marriage with Sansa.

The best way to take over the North would be to marry a Stark, Sansa. Killing Jon would make that never happen. Plus he loves Sansa. He would do anything for her.

why most of the people who were still loyal to the starks were involved in this battle
leadership was changing out of ramsey's hands anyway would have been the perfect time/opportunity to take over

and not sure about his feelings towards sansa, wasn't she just the key to the north for him

He loves her. He has admitted he would do anything for her multiple times. What better way to win her over than helping get her home back with her brother?

Plus technically it isn't even his army. Do you think the Arryns would betray Sansa?

Tully's were one of the only people who might recognize the Starks that didn't come to the battle but they were sieged by Jaime Lannister
