It's developing the character to the audience, so they don't just come in at act 3 and give the hero their biggest struggle of the movie randomly. Like the Emperor does in the original trilogy (and also the prequels).

Revenge of the Sith was one of my favs along with empire. Return of jedi was good and a new hope after that but then we start getting into Disneyland territory along with the other prequel trash.
