He bulked up a ton to play a boxer and then he got fat, something that's relatively easy to do when you've just recently added a bunch of mass. Not saying I'd like to or even be able to do this, but compared to some of the other actors we're talking about, this doesn't even register as difficult, yet alone "insane".

Nah he actually shed lots of weight to look like a lean boxer, he didn't bulk.

Once he did that he put on a record 60 pounds to play the fat retired depressed LaMotta.

He subsequently won an Oscar for his efforts.

You make a good point though.

A few I haven't seen listed:

Eva Green - Absolutely brilliant in Penny Dreadful
John Lithgow - Amazing range as an actor. From brilliant comedy in 3rd Rock to one of the greatest TV villains ever as the Trinity Killer in Dexter
Benedict Cumberbatch - Has the Midas touch right now. Everything he touches turns to gold.

And I'm sure you liking him brings meaning to his life.

Oh wait this is just a forum for our community to voice their opinions, I forgot about that.

I consider Michael Fassbender as the best male actor working today.
Honorable Mentions: Benicio Del Toro, Garry Oldmen, Tom Cruise and Tom Hardy
For the past probably Klaus Kinski.
On female I agree with Lawrence, she is awesome given the right role.
I also like Scarlett Johansson

I agree.

Matthew McConaughey is definitely in the top 3 for male actors at the moment/the last 5 years.

Have you seen his performance in the great 2001 film Thirteen Conversations About One Thing? He's excellent when not acting in junk like Sahara and Fool's Gold.

He was also good in contact, but that's good and bad mix, the last 5 or so years he hasn't done anything I think anyone could call bad.
